Biography

In 1973, Jeanne Bushey emigrated from the U.S. to Iqaluit, Nunavut with her husband and their two daughters. As a primary teacher in a predominately Inuit elementary school, she quickly realized she needed to learn Inuktitut in order to communicate with her young students. This began Jeanne's enduring interest in the Inuit people, their language and culture.
In 1978, Jeanne and her family moved to Yellowknife, N.T. where Jeanne continued teaching. In 1981, she co-founded the Mildred Hall Festival of Drama which annually entertained Yellowknifers with three evenings of Native and non-Native one-act plays for over seventeen years. In 1994, Jeanne's first book, A Sled Dog for Moshi, was published by Hyperion Press Ltd. This began several years of writing during which Jeanne wrote short stories, educational articles, a parenting column, and published Holiday Hang-up's, an arts and crafts book of seasonal mobiles.
In 1999, Jeanne and her husband moved to Richmond, B.C. where she continues to write children's books. No longer a full-time teacher, Jeanne enjoys visiting schools and sharing her books and knowledge of the Canadian Arctic. She is available in the lower Mainland for author visits and presentations about the Inuit and their culture.
