Biography Karen Autio is the author of historical novels for readers ages 10 and up. SECOND WATCH was inspired by the tale of a silver spoon from her Finnish grandmother and the wreck of the Canadian Pacific steamship Empress of Ireland in 1914. SECOND WATCH was nominated for the BC Chocolate Lily Award and has been enthusiastically received by children, teachers, parents, and reviewers. SAARA'S PASSAGE was inspired by the mystery surrounding her Finnish grandmother’s battle with tuberculosis, and the letters she wrote to her infant daughter, Karen’s mother, while quarantined with TB. SAARA'S PASSAGE was also nominated for the BC Chocolate Lily Award.
