Biography

Karen Autio is the author of historical novels for readers ages 10 and up. SECOND WATCH was inspired by the tale of a silver spoon from her Finnish grandmother and the wreck of the Canadian Pacific steamship Empress of Ireland in 1914. SECOND WATCH was nominated for the BC Chocolate Lily Award and has been enthusiastically received by children, teachers, parents, and reviewers. SAARA'S PASSAGE was inspired by the mystery surrounding her Finnish grandmother’s battle with tuberculosis, and the letters she wrote to her infant daughter, Karen’s mother, while quarantined with TB. SAARA'S PASSAGE was also nominated for the BC Chocolate Lily Award.

Karen grew up in Nipigon, Ontario, and now lives in Kelowna, BC. She is a graduate of the University of Waterloo and worked as a software developer for several years before pursuing her long held dream of writing for children. Karen loves to interact with students to share her passion for research and the resulting “jigsaw puzzle” of transforming historical facts into a fascinating story.
