Biography

Writer, educator, former principal of a large Vancouver elementary school, I now teach a university course on teaching reading. I strongly advocate for the use of literature in reading programs. I have been writing for many years. Several of my books are used in schools' early literacy programs. I have written several picture books both fiction and non fiction, and an early chapter book. As an educator, I have published several articles on the power of literature to enhance children's literacy development and given workshops on topics such as: the importance of reading aloud to pre-schoolers, literature-based reading instruction, the reading-writing connection, using nonfiction books to teach reading. My new book, 'Once Upon A Bathtime" (illustrated by Elizabeth Shefrin) comes out this summer and celebrates the bedtime story.
