Biography

I was born in England but moved to Canada when I was seven. I read pretty much every book in our Southern Ontario small town library. Fortunately I grew up in a house full of books and soon moved on to the books on my parents' shelves. I still read everything: short stories, novels, travel writing, memoirs. I adore libraries and am completely incapable of walking past a bookstore.

I also love traveling and have spent time in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Africa and South East Asia. I spent a year sailing a boat down to the Bahamas and back again and and my young adult novel, A Thousand Shades of Blue, draws on that adventure .

I write for kids, teens and adults, and I have also worked as a social worker and university instructor. I enjoy talking with groups about my books and about the creative process. I live in Victoria with my partner and young son.

Book types: juvenile fiction, YA fiction

Guest speaker/presentation information

I am available for author visits, school and library presentations, writing workshops and conferences.

All presentations can be tailored to the needs of the particular group. I can do more general talks about my books and the creative process; or I can do writing workshops that range from an hour to a half-day. Writing workshops can be adapted to the needs of the group but could include the following:

* Creative Writing: Using your memories, experiences, questions and curiosity to create compelling writing and convincing characters.
* Editing Your Work: Turning a rough first draft into a polished manuscript.
* Getting Published: Researching your market, writing a query letter, and submitting your work.

My interactive presentations and workshops can be geared to grades four through twelve, or for adult audiences.

Please contact me for information about rates and availability.

Presentation geographic range: Vancouver, Coast, Lower Mainland, Gulf and Vancouver Islands, Canada - beyond BC, USA

Presentation audience age groups: grades 4-6, grades 7-8, high school, college/university/adult
